Jafumega / The Police
This band reflects a common practice in Portugal during the 80's and early 90's. It pretty much consisted of writing songs under the heavy influence of a famous foreign band. The lyrics would almost always be in portuguese and rather often, they'd be quite good.
Like it or not, most of these bands are still frequently heard on the radios, and many of their songs still remains hits. Jafumega is a fine example.
Rádio Macau / The Cure
Again, the same logic I explained above with Portuguese bands from the 80's and 90's applies here.
I think I like the Portuguese version better, probably because I really like her voice.
José Cid / Elvis Presley / Meat Loaf
"Um Rock dos Bons Velhos Tempos" pays quite a homage to both Jailhouse Rock and Dead Ringer For Love.
Íris / The Animals / Bob Dylan
This one is a bit odd, because this Portuguese band is not supposed to be taken seriously, so their songs can be taken for parodies and therefore are funnier if they're similar to existent ones, right? I mean, no band with lyrics such as (translation:) "Jump into the sea and tell people you were pushed / Kiss me on the mouth and call me Tarzan" can be serious. Right?
Jorge Palma / Bob Dylan
To be honest, I'd never heard this Bob Dylan song until recently and I was quite surprised to find out that this song, "Encosta-te a mim" (translation: "Lean on Me"), wasn't as original as everyone thought, even though it has great lyrics. Makes me wonder if any other famous songs by Jorge Palma are as incredibly similar to other songs as this one is.
Still, I like Jorge Palma's song better.
Per7ume / Alanis Morissette
I have no idea who these guys are, but they're on the radio every 10 minutes, so I'm pretty much fed up with them. Besides, they write their name with a number, which annoys me even more. And their rhyming is atrocious. And like that wasn't enough, Rui Veloso - an artist I actually like - is also in it. So considering all this amounts to an Alanis Morissette
rip-off, I really hope the only reason Rui Veloso agreed to sing this song was because he was held at gunpoint.
I don't like the Alanis Morissete song as well.
Os Golpes / Franz Ferdinand
There's a portuguese band around these days which is being praised as showing some promise and being awesome and whatnot. To me, it's not that they're bad (although the lyrics are); I just can't get past the fact they sound exactly like a mash-up of Franz Ferdinand and The Strokes. To make things worse, "Os Golpes", as they're called, is an acceptable translation for "The Strokes", so, unfortunately, this is not as innocent as it should be.
Vila Nazca / Shout Out Louds
This song by Vila Nazca manages to remind myself of two different Shout Out Louds songs at the same time ("A Track and a Train" and more subtlety, "Tonight I Have to Leave It") so clearly the influence is there.
Bueno.sair.es / The Wombats
This is also a new band and I quite like them. But then again, The Wombats are one of my favourite bands of the moment, so I guess there's really no surprise there. Bueno.sair.es sounds more "adult", though. At least I think it does - not sure what the lyrics are really about, as I can't really hear the main singer throughout most of the song.
Owl City / The Postal Service
I really thought "Fireflies" was by The Postal Service. I did! I mean, how can it not be? It sounds so much like them.
Noah & The Whale / The Who
It's just a few chords, but they sure ring a bell. It's almost impossible not be reminded of "Baba O'Riley" when listening to "Tonight's the Kind of Night".
Cage The Elephant / Beck
To be honest, I'm actually more familiar with Cage The Elephant's than with Beck's songs (yeah, shame on me). In fact, I think I only properly know this song by Beck, so I can't really say if there are any other similar-sounding songs between these guys.
Just listing some bands/songs that sound like, share some similarities or remind me of other bands/songs, even if just vaguely. I'm not an expert on music and I don't intend to accuse anyone of plagiarism nor offend any fans of the bands I mention. This list just reflects my opinion, and it all comes down to a matter of taste - some I like, some I don't.
Also, my English sucks. Sorry for that.
Suggestions are welcomed. : )
