A young man who wants to become an artist celebrates his birthday and wants to avoid upsetting his domineering father who has other plans for him. When the son gets knocked unconscious he takes a journey on the imaginary Interstate 60
This film looked like some slow indie road movie but was in fact a relatively fast paced fantasy. A bit too sledgehammer in its message for me but enjoyable ideas and performances all round

Following (1998)
A young writer takes the habit of following people to help understand their characters. When he follows one man who turns out to be a thief he becomes involved in a much more dangerous world
Christopher Nolans first feature and this is good but a bit too confusing at times. Also it quite hard to believe the Cobb character
A worthwhile film though

11:14 (2003) (2003)
A series of small segments all related to an incident taking place at 11:14 pm
Hmm this was intricate and clever but lacked likeable characters apart from Hilary Swanks character.
Above average simply for how well the pieces all link together. View it as a clever puzzle and nothing more and its enjoyable

Mysterious Skin (2004)
A geeky young man who experiences nosebleeds and blackouts tries to find out why he cannot recall 5 hours from a day when he was 8,,,being linked to another young man who has become a gay prostitute or possibly to alien abduction
Well this film was tightly paced, different and largely enjoyable throughout. But it seemed a bit too try-hard different and the resolution of the mystery is kind of dull

An English sound engineer is chosen to work at an Italian sound studio to record sound effects for a horror film and...
This film started well but never really went anywhere you think the buildup will intensify into something meaningful but it never happens. Nicely shot and a great set-up which is never realised - shame

Memories of Murder (2003)
A pair of corrupt police are joined by a clean outsider policeman to investigate a serial killer who is murdering women
This was largely interesting and had a good dynamic shifting the didginess of the 2 cops a bit to the newcomer BUT its spoilt by a largely incomprehensible ending

A French criminal Pepe le Moko is holed up in the casbah region of Algiers. Though the local police are aware of his presence they cannot arrest him until he is forced to leave the area
This was a good idea but the acting was really wooden and there was little to no action - A modern remake could work wonders picking up the pace adding atmosphere
Hedy Lamarr as the girl used to tempt the criminal out is almost heartbreakingly beautiful

Disturbia (2007)
A teen boy who was injured in a car crash which killed his father has to stay under house arrest when he punches a teacher. Bored he starts observing the neighbours and is convinced one neighbour is a killer
Well this basically a modern teen version of Rear Window but not as good. The biggest problem I had was that the background had no real effect on the story and I was kind of hoping for a big twist or even double twist...it just seemed they wasted a lot of potential in this flick

Boys (1996)
A young woman (Winona Ryder) is questioned by the police and shortly after falls off her horse and becomes unconscious. She is rescued by a group of boys from a nearby school
This was different, it was okay but nothing great...the build up was quite good and the setting unique but there was no real pay-off with the ending being rushed and ho hum
xxixii's rating:
A man married to a woman who has had psychological problems applies even more pressure on her to drive her insane
The main problem with this film is that its all too...obvious... and at no point do we actually think the wife is actually going crazy
Its a great idea but not well executed imho - though the ending is quite tense
Apparently the term "gaslight-ing" started to get used as a term in psychiatry for psychological manipulation as a result of this film
I wonder if the star studded remake in 1944 is better and I wonder if a modern version would be cool

A young Danish teacher is sacked from her job and dumps her boyfriend and in a chance of fate takes a position as a teacher in an isolated island community in Norway. shortly after arriving she finds that a few deaths have occurred and the island people are hiding dark secrets
A young Danish teacher is sacked from her job and dumps her boyfriend and in a chance of fate takes a position as a teacher in an isolated island community in Norway. shortly after arriving she finds that a few deaths have occurred and the island people are hiding dark secrets
I liked this film quite a lot until the reveal as it was a weird mix of rom com and fish out of water - I also liked that nearly everything bad that occurred was low key and believable BUT once we find out who was the main culprit it quickly descended into cliched ott horror

Worth watching for the first 50 minutes
