Up (2009)
Being that this is a computer-animated feature made by Pixar, the 3-D experience was stunning. This was my introduction to the new 3-D, and I was very impressed.

The Final Destination (2009)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
I haven't watched this movie since the cinema, and I remember enjoying it with the 3-D. I'll probably hate it in 2-D, but I enjoyed the 3-D experience.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
A Christmas Carol (2009)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
Having viewed this movie in 3-D twice now (once at the cinema, once at home), I can honestly say this is one of the best 3-D animated features I've seen. The extra-dimensional effects are frankly stunning.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Avatar (2009)
Viewed in IMAX 3-D
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
For the naysayers of 3-D, look no further than Avatar. It goes without saying that the film is stunning with an added dimension; it's my favourite use of 3-D so far.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
I very much enjoyed this movie in 3-D. The effects are extraordinarily, despite the fact that it was converted to 3-D in post-production. I'm a proud owner of the 3-D Blu-ray.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Clash of the Titans (2010)
My enjoyment of 3-D began to waiver when I beheld this dog turd. The converted 3-D looks dreadful... It hurt my eyes.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
Oh my gosh. Pretty much all animated titles look magnificent with the glasses on, but this one is more breathtaking than most. The flying scenes give you chills, and the climax is more emotive and exciting in three dimensions. I actually don't want to watch this in 2-D again, the 3-D is just that immersive and spectacular.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Shrek Forever After (2010)
By this time, I had started to rebel against 3-D, and only saw the movie in 3-D because my brother dragged me along to it. It was enjoyable in 3-D, but it cannot hold a candle to Avatar.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Toy Story 3 (2010)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
I loved seeing this in 3-D. It's a Pixar animated movie, so of course it looked spectacular.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Piranha 3D (2010)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
Despite the titles hurting my eyes and despite a few headache-inducing moments, the 3-D experience of Piranha is highly enjoyable.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Jackass 3 (2010)
This is one of my favourite applications of 3-D, easily. The boys didn't take it seriously and used the film as an opportunity to generally goof around. I had a good laugh seeing this in a cinema in 3-D.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Sanctum (2011)
Meh... It was real 3-D and the director did a good job making an underwater 3-D movie, but it's not one of the best uses of the format.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Thor (2011)
I loved Thor, but the 3-D effects sucked. After this movie I was officially sick of paying the 3-D surcharge for a visually damaged motion picture. It's one of the worst abuses of the format since Clash of the Titans.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Final Destination 5 (2011)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
The 3-D surcharge for this movie pissed me off to no end. I suppose it was a solid use of the format, though.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
This is a movie which renewed my confidence in the 3-D format - it looked absolutely stunning on my 3-D screen. In fact this is a movie which benefits from putting on those glasses.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Hugo (2011)
Hugo has received a lot of acclaim for its 3-D, and deservedly so. The effects look marvellous, and the gimmick is tied to the narrative's central messages. Great stuff.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Underworld: Awakening (2012)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
Simply put, the 3-D effects are harmless and inessential. It was filmed in 3-D, but the extra dimension adds nothing to the experience.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
The 3-D effects here are entirely inessential, but at least it was filmed with 3-D cameras and does work to establish a genuine sense of depth. Plus, it's fun to watch blood spray out at you!
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Titanic (1997)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
This is the best 3-D conversion I have ever seen, period. Hell, it looks better than most native 3-D titles. Cameron knows what he's doing with 3-D, and actually enhances the storytelling of this 15-year-old film by adding a third dimension. Truly breathtaking.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Wrath of the Titans (2012)
Despite being converted to 3-D in post-production, the three-dimensional effects are actually really good. Hell, some shots look like they were filmed natively in 3-D. It's clear that 3-D technology has improved tenfold in the past few years.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
The Avengers (2012)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
They're getting better at converting films to 3-D, but it still doesn't mean every blockbuster should be released in the format. I saw The Avengers in 2-D initially and it was just fine. The 3-D is solid, but it's completely inessential.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Prometheus (2012)
Conceived and shot in 3-D, Prometheus looks absolutely stunning in the format. With glasses on, every detail of thus majestic visual feast becomes more apparent, and the depth is absolutely killer. No shots look flat; the film looks consistently excellent. Well done, Ridley Scott! This is definitely a 3D Blu-ray to buy.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Another terrific example of why filming in 3-D yields a far better result than a conversion ever could. The sense of depth and space here is terrific. I wouldn't say the 3-D is essential, but the movie is all about being gimmicky and cheesy, so I'd say it's a worthy way to enjoy the experience. I certainly enjoyed it.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012)
After a while I forgot I was watching the thing in 3-D, to be honest. It's one of the most rote 3-D presentations I've seen in years, applied to the movie simply because it's CGI-animated. It plays just fine in 2-D.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Holy fucking shit, was this awful in 3-D. Was this even in 3-D? I've never seen a flatter, more 2-D image while donning 3-D glasses. For a native 3-D movie, this is baffling. For fuck's sake, I removed my glasses constantly and the image looked exactly the same, except brighter. There was no sense of depth and nothing popped out at the screen... Horrible!
PvtCaboose91's rating:
The 3-D wasn't very good at all. Some shots looked good, but for the most part I forgot I was even wearing the glasses. It was a pretty flat movie.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Piranha 3DD (2012)
Meh. The original film's 3-D was more notable. This was really rote and unremarkable.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Bait (2012)
Wasn't overly impressed at all. It doesn't do much for the film and it doesn't enhance the scares or atmosphere. The 3-D is completely inessential.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
Surprisingly good... The 3-D established a sense of depth quite well, and there was genuine space between objects. This is one of the strongest 3-D presentations I've seen.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
I wouldn't say the 3-D was entirely necessary, but the three-dimensional effects were genuinely excellent. It has a wonderful sense of depth, and people and locations look truly 3-D.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
The 3-D was handled very well. About as good as can be expected. But it's still not essential. The LOTR movies play beautifully in 2-D.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
This was a great experience in 3-D. It was shot natively in the format, which means it looks genuinely 3-D. Nice sense of depth and it heightens the immediacy of several action scenes.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
The picture is at times too dark with the 3D glasses on, but on the whole the 3D wasn't bad. At least some scenes were shot natively in 3D, resulting in some impressive depth and dimensionality from time to time.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Oz the Great and Powerful (2013)
This is some of the best 3D I've ever seen. Enough said.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)
Horrible. Mostly very flat, and adds absolutely nothing to the experience. Plus some of the action scenes are shaky, making the whole thing a big blur.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Jurassic Park (1993)
Viewed on an LG Cinema 3-D screen
Surprisingly good, considering it's a classic film that was never intended to be in 3-D. However, a few shots look a bit rough, and the photography tends to make backgrounds look extremely blurry. The conversion is well-done, but it's not essential.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Iron Man 3 (2013)
The first two Iron Man movies were not in 3-D. Which tells you how inessential the extra dimension is here. The conversion is halfway decent, but it adds nothing to the experience.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Breathtaking. This is a visually succulent movie, hence it's just remarkable to watch in 3-D. Each frame is so insanely detailed, and the 3-D makes this world look truly alive. It immerses you into this fantasyland beautifully. It's a remarkable experience.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
3-D conversions are a hell of a lot better than they used to be. At times this looks natively 3-D, with lots of genuine depth and space between objects. I was very impressed. But sometimes I wished I wasn't wearing the glasses, because of Abrams' shaky-camera techniques. The 3-D sometimes works, but it's a hindrance at times.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Every frame of this movie is staggeringly beautiful, and the 3-D enhances the experience more than one would expect. It was shot natively in the format, hence depth and dimension is spot-on. After a while you stop thinking about the 3-D and find yourself immersed in the drama.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Despicable Me 2 (2013)
This is some of the most rote 3-D I've ever seen. It's an animated movie, so of course it's in 3-D. After a while, I forgot I was wearing the glasses, as the 3-D was so strictly unremarkable. It's not bad - it's just inessential.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Even though this is Pixar's first animated feature, Toy Story scrubs up really well in 3-D. Colour me impressed.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Toy Story 2 (1999)
Okay, wow. It looks like the animators made this movie with future 3-D in mind, because it looks mind-blowing in three dimensions. So many shots take full advantage of the format; the opening adventure with Buzz is outstanding, and Andy's room seems to be stretched out in front of us. The film soars to great heights in 3-D, and I miss it whenever I'm watching in regular 2-D.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Another animated movie benefits from the 3-D upgrade. The effects here are really well-judged, and I was mightily impressed. I enjoyed the movie just as much in 2-D, but I'll happily put on the glasses from time to time.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Men in Black 3 (2012)
I saw the 3-D trailer for this in the cinema, and I was not impressed. It had that storybook look & feel. Hence, I skipped the 3-D exhibition in the cinema. But on home video, I decided to take a look, and I was actually impressed. I enjoyed the experience; the conversion is surprisingly well-judged, the aliens look great in 3-D, and I generally had fun with it. I approve.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Gravity (2013)
Holy fucking shit. That's all I have to say. This is the poster child for 3D, right alongside Avatar.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Wow. This is some of the best 3-D I've ever seen.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
Texas Chainsaw 3D (2013)
They went for gimmicky 3-D here, for sure. There are certain shots during which chainsaws pop out at you, or are thrown at you. But on the whole, the 3-D was not worth it.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
I loved watching this in 3-D. The filmmakers used the extra dimension as a fun gimmick, and there's nothing wrong with that. 3-D is directly discussed by the characters, and they keep chucking things at the screen. It was great fun and extremely amusing.
PvtCaboose91's rating:
I viewed this in HFR 3-D, and I was impressed. It's not exactly essential, but it made the experience more immersive, and the extra-dimensional stuff was very well-done. I will be buying the 3-D Blu-ray!

With the ridiculous 3-D surcharge, I always try to avoid seeing a 3-D movie at the cinema unless I feel it will be worth it. These are the films I've seen in 3-D.
