These guys have only released one studio albums and a few LP's and boy were they good. A formative post-hardcore emo band of their day.

An amazing Jangle pop band with only one recorded LP. These guys wrote timeless melody after melody on their self titled eponymous debut.

Galaxie 500 is a great band. Released three LP's I believe, but i've only listened to one. And it was amazing and enough to get them in to say the least.
I'll take this time to post the artists I couldn't find on here.
Jenny Hval: An art pop singer-songwriter
Game Theory: A paisley underground scene band found in LA during the mid to late 80's who borrow extensively on psychedelic music of the 60's and adding in with the recent (at that time) jangle pop movement. Really great band.
Dream Syndicate: Is also another paisley underground band. But they were one of the bigger ones that actually had some initial success.
Rain Parade: Once again another rather successful bands in terms of the paisley underground scene.
Guided by the Voices: I thought for sure these guys would be here, they're somewhat popular. They're basically the Beatles (what the beatles did good on, While My Guitar Gently Wipes, Blackbird, Eleanor Rigby, Taxman, A Day in the Life and you get the idea of the few great songs they had) w/o any of the filler crap that we found in the Beatles' self titled, the terrible pop singles of their earlier days and the fail experimentation. Guided by the Voices is an essential band.
So get to it mods, add these bands.

Now let me explain with Kanye.
He's a bit different in our case. He's definitely very well known, but for all the wrong reasons. People throw him off as a douche-bag because of that Taylor Swift debacle and why I think its b.s.
They both benefited because it gave them tons of publicity. It played to both their demographics. Taylor's fans just supported her that much more, and Kanye got to be the 'crazy, unpredictable guy'. They both sold a shitload of albums afterwords. Beyonce got a very famous name drop. MTV got tons of free publicity.
win win win win
manufactured controversy is nothing new.
on top of that, they had the same management. I'm more than sure that this display was set up.
Now I can banter on and on about Kanye West, but I think this guide to his music really showcases him more than the celeb than he is. www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/1hl2dh/guide_to_kanye_west/
Not only is Kanyes' producing and rapping skills critically acclaimed across the board (for those who even bother with his music that is) but "As his career progressed throughout the early 21st century, West shattered certain stereotypes about rappers, becoming a superstar on his own terms without adapting his appearance, his rhetoric, or his music to fit any one musical mold."
Convinced now?

I've noticed this place doesn't have a bunch of underground music labeled so i'll do it for them because they're missing out. Though I have found a few. And on those few i'll name the ones that I couldn't find that should be here. Its not like they're TOTALLY unknown, but they're relatively a lot smaller in comparison to some of the bigger mainstream hits like Radiohead or Pink Floyd for instance.
