God what a load of crap
Cronenberg's worst flick - its just a billionaire talking in a car really. Oh DC makes the look interesting and there is a vague hint that it could have veered into body horror but this film was just BS
Appallingly erratic dialogue from kind of interesting (about 20% of the time) to complete pamphlet/weird commentary which nobody would say in reality(80%) - IMDB trivia says that Cronenberg wrote the screenplay in 6 days - it shows
laughable sex scenes
avoid this one - too pretentious too much talk and its bad talk
I would rank it 1 but at least it looks nice and the soundtrack is kind of cool

Four Lions (2010)
A group of British Muslims decide to "commit" jihad and plan a terror attack but are so incompetent...
Good idea but a little too deliberatel controversial and long to be that funny. The idea outstays its welcome after about 45 minutes - if theis were shorter it would have been much better. Still there are some chuckles and LOLs to be found here particularly if you have a dark sens eof humour

Another (2012)
Following hospitalisation a boy enters a new school and quickly discovers that a girl is being systematically ignored and the reason for it
This was a fairly typical school room curse type Asian horror - some weird deaths but thankfully saved by the 2 young leads who do seem to have some screen presence
OK

Torment (2013)
a young family settling into a new home are terrorised by people wearing toy animal masks
hmm this looked promising but didnt really engage me much - nothing at all special about this home invasion horror type of film

Beijing Punk (2010)
a documentary about the rising punk rock scene in China
kind of fascinating as it shows really life for a few punk bands in China.
tbh I think the music and look is laughably derivative but hey I was 11 in 1976 in England when punk happened so this is all 40 years late
Anyway it was fascinating seeing the almost brain dead Chinese skinhead punk group Mansaido (?), the pretty good musically but hugely derivative Demerit and the most interesting group Hedgehog

A girl visits her injured brother who is learning to walk again after an accident. She discovers a mobile phone app which seems to have a life of its own and has bad intent
This was very hit and miss with a few scenes actually being good but the plot was like a kids scifi show from the 80s
The lead actress looks like a taller cuter Emma Watson

6 Minutes of Death (2013)
In a small town circa 1860 small pox takes the life of a little boy. He enters a world that will get him prepped and re-incarnated for his next life. The library is a second chance, a place to select a storybook life and be reborn. The evil darkness takes the boy into lower earth. All the corners of hell are fighting to keep him from reaching the next level. Four guardians are sent to rescue him but they only have 30 minutes.
a good idea but most of it screams of very low budget - the acting is poor mainly, effects when used are ok but as weak as you can imagine, the action/fights are poor

Earth to Echo (2014)
A trio of boys find a metallic little alien which they name Echo and try to help it leave Earth to return home
This was pretty poor and is basically a bad version of ET
The characters are annoying coupled together with the bizarre artistic choice of making this a found footage type thing and it leaves a lot to be desired. The Echo alien looks cute and some effects sequences are fine but it all amounts to nothing really.
Kudos for trying to make this realistic, but realism is often very mundane. I cannot imagine kids liking this film

Toxin (2014)
A small island is used for biological warfare experiments and months later after all inhabitants are believed dead and a tourist charter flight is hijacked and forced to fly to the island
This was a hit and miss low budget 28 Days Later some parts being nasty but most of it feeling like a pilot film for an 80s tv series about survival on a zombie island. Depite its cheesiness it gets on with it and keeps the action flowing so its entertaining at least
Interestingly the male lead Doug Chapman looks a LOT like a young Clint Eastwood IMHO

In the near future the world experiences an ice age but some of humanity have survived by living on a train that races around the world. The lowly people are kept at the rear of the train and make an attempt to reach the engine room at the front
An interesting idea for 40 minutes but as a 2 hour film this dragged and was a schizoid mess to be frank - does it want to be some fighting/martial arts flick? a Gilliam-esque dark satire? some allegory? the pacing was all over the place and the stories logic was poor to say the least - yeah the train has to keep moving but what about maintenance of the track? I am really surprised this film got greenlighted

Gnarr (2010)
ultra low budget documentary about Icelandic comedian Jon Gnarr forming The Best Party as a joke to make fun of the real politicians in an election for mayor of Reykavik. Things get weirder as the joke party starts to gain support and ends up winning the election
Kind of interesting especially to see Iceland. It would have been nice to see some sort of follow up as to how they dealt with the problems/issues. Iheard that they basically got big banks explaoiting Iceland out of the country but theres no hint of that in this film
Still worth a look

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
A trio of people are sent to investigate a newspaper ad which they believe is a joke about time travel
Hmm. The premise was good but this felt like an overlong Twilight Zone episode and not a good episode at that- More light romance/drama than anything really - dont expect any/much scifi
I cannot recommend this one tbh

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (2013)
After the local radio station is bought out a siege takes place where a disgruntled DJ holds people hostage and former TV star Alan Partridge has to mediate between him and the police
Quite funny throughout but like a lot of films of tv comedies the gaps between laughs is quite log - at an hour long this would have been excellent...but at 90 minutes its hit and miss

After a zombie creating virus has wiped out around 100 million people on earth and has been contained, the survivors have to deal with the people infected but kept from turning into zombies with a daily drug injection
Oh this had a great premise and is fairly unique being a post zombie movie - so credit for trying something different. Its well shot and the leads are fine. As expected from a mid budget movie there are no stars and some scenes do look a bit underfunded...But the main problem is that the horror really isnt there. This plays out more like a drama/thriller about a virus with the zombies almost being a side issue. One jumpscare which was unexpected, and a bit of low budget but effective gore in places. A nice little twist of sorts at the end
This reminded me a little of another post zombie movie Les Revenants (The Returned)

Don't Look Back (2009)
An author starts to experience loss of memory and identity and becomes paranoid. Its all related to an incident when she was young however she cannot recall what that was
This had great potential but never really went anywhere ending up a confused mess. Even the hints at Cronenberg body horror were never really explored

A man wakes up to find himself in a warehouse/factory with other men who have obviously been involved in some sort of crime. None of the people have any memory of who they are and what has happened. They gradually piece together their memories but uncover lots of problems
Sort of Memento meets Saw - A good cast, well acted, nicely done on a low budget. The plot has so many twists and turns it keeps you on your toes at all times. Apart from a few lapses its great
