Final 2014 Oscar Predictions

My predictions haven't changed in this category. Saving Mr. Banks seems like it may miss though, it hasn't done very well with precursors. But there have been nine in this category for the last two years, and I don't see that changing this year. Dallas Buyers Club, Blue Jasmine, and Philomena are the most likely spoilers.

*Steve McQueen- 12 Years a Slave


*David O. Russell- American Hustle


Cuarón, McQueen, and O. Russell seem like locks at this point, and Greengrass is looking pretty good. That leave the final spot to likely come down to Spike Jonze and Martin Scorsese for The Wolf of Wall Street. Jonze missed out on the DGA's, but there's a lot of love for Her, and I think that gets him into the top five. Still, the Coen Brothers (Inside Llewyn Davis) or Alexander Payne(Nebraska) could surprise.

*Matthew McConaughey- Dallas Buyers Club


*Robert Redford- All is Lost


No change from my previous predictions, though I think Redford is on the fence. While it's likely he'll be nominated, he's a Hollywood legend, Leonardo DiCaprio has gained a lot of momentum for his off-the-wall performance in The Wolf of Wall Street. And if DiCaprio does get in, I think he may even win.

*Sandra Bullock- Gravity


*Judi Dench- Philomena


*Emma Thompson- Saving Mr. Banks


Blanchett, Bullock, Dench, and Thompson seem like locks here, with the toss up here being is Adams. Meryl Streep is the favorite to make it in for August: Osage County, but American Hustle has gained so much momentum, that I think that pushes Adams into the top five.

*Julia Roberts- August: Osage County


*June Squibb- Nebraska


*Oprah Winfrey- Lee Daniels' The Butler


Lawrence, Nyong'o, Squibb, and Roberts seem like locks, though Osage County's mixed reception could hurt Roberts' shot. Winfrey will likely make it in, but Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine) or even Scarlett Johansson for her vocal work in Her.

This is probably the most packed category of the year. The five I've got seem safe, but James Gandolfini for Enough Said and Jonah Hill for The Wolf of Wall Street could make it in.

*Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke & Richard Linklater- Before Midnight


*Billy Ray- Captain Phillips

Philomena's the only toss-up here, the rest seem pretty safe. Tracy Letts could make it in for August: Osage County. Either way, this is one of the weakest years for this category in quite a while.
