Antonio, an unemployed man who finds a coveted job that requires a bicycle. When it is stolen on his first day of work, Antonio and his young son Bruno (Enzo Staiola) begin a frantic search, learning valuable lessons along the way. The movie focuses on both the relationship between the father and the son and the larger framework of poverty and unemployment in postwar Italy.

Dekalog I (1989)

Of course you should watch the whole Decalogue set but the first feature is one of the strongest and helps set the tone.

The Return (2003)

Two teenage Russian boys have their father return home suddenly after being absent for 12 years. The father takes the boys on a holiday to a remote island on a lake in the north of Russia that turns into a test of manhood of almost mythic proportions.

The Trap (2007)

A man must make a terrible decision for the sake of his family in this downbeat drama.
The more I think about this film the more I love very aspect. It is a tight well scripted film where every scene holds some importance to the film as a whole.

The Son (2002) (2002)

A joinery instructor at a rehab center refuses to take a new teen as his apprentice, but then begins to follow the boy through the hallways and streets.
Again not technically a 'father and son' film. The film still covers a lot of emotional, moral and social territory.
jaytoast's rating:

Secondhand Lions (2003)

OK, not technically a 'father and son' film. The story of a young boy left to be raised by his grand-uncles. I found the film endearing but many people found the film trite.

The Child (2005)

After learning he has a newborn son, a small-time thief attempts to go straight - but not until his amorality is pushed to its breaking point - in this social-problem drama from writer-directors Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne.
jaytoast's rating:

A man finds his heart and soul torn between loyalty to his family and a need to be redeemed from his violent lifestyle in this powerful drama from France.

Father & Son (2003)

Aleksandr Sokurov's film tend to run on the 'overly artistic' side of film making. "Father & Son" is best described as visual poetry that is both abstract and tender.

World's Greatest Dad (2010)
OK, so this film really doesn't quite fit on the list. A rather morbid dark comedy but... it was fun to watch.
jaytoast's rating:

Fingers (1978)
"The Beat That My Heart Skipped" is a remake of this film. Alas, that fact hasn't inspired me to watch the film.
Martian Child (2007)
I really enjoyed John and Joan Cusack together in this film. It was a little too cute for my taste. It is still a rather decent family film.
