Intolerance (1916)
Having not seen that many movies in the teens yet, this movie wins by default. Long and honestly tedious I did enjoy it, but it is not for the tired and ready for bed type.

An Andalusian Dog (1929)
Although a short film, this movie is brilliant. Some of the imagery is astounding and revolutionary for its time. Solidified my Luis Bunuel appreciation.

It Happened One Night (1934)
This is the essential romantic comedy of the ages. Claudette Colbert is comedic gold, as is Clark Gable. I think this movie along with Some Like it Hot boasts one of the best closing lines ever written.

Having watched a lot of WWII films for school The Best Years of Our Lives is the culmination of an exhuastive watching regime. The examination of character study and PSW was a revelation for its time.
Davie50's rating:

Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Gloria Swanson is amazing in this film. Her character is both pitiful, terrifying and brilliantly amazing. The story told is so well done you forget it is told by a dead man and we already know the ending. And that ending, with her coming towards the camera, if the movie pulls you in properly then that ending shot is one of the most terrifying in film history.

Westerns would be one of my least favorite film genres, but this movie kind of subverts the western and flips it on its ear. It is a buddy flick, an adventure and a western all rolled into one. The 60's is a powerful decade of film and for this one to triumph over some others is a true testament of its greatness.

There wasn't even a contest when it came to picking a movie for the 70's. Some may argue Star Wars, but no movie in that decade was as big or amazing as Jaws. The music, the timeless characters, the directing, the never working shark, it is all brilliant.
Davie50's rating:

Blue Velvet (1986)
First time I watched this movie I actually disliked it a lot. But that is part of the appeal of Blue Velvet and David Lynch's work in general. The movie grows on you, or it seeps into your being and will not leave you unchanged. It is seedy, disturbing and almost perfect because of it.

There were so many I could have picked from the 90's. Showgirls is my favorite movie ever because I love it, but when picking what I consider the best movie of the decade it is definitely Toy Story. Unheard of at the time a fully computer rendered movie couldn't be good, but boy where we wrong. Toy Story is a timeless tell for all ages and has stood the test of time to still be one of the best things to ever come out of Disney.
Davie50's rating:

Everything about this movie is perfection. Although still early to tell, I believe this film will go down as being one of the best films of all time in the history of cinema. I usually hate to say if you don't like a movie then you just "didn't get it" but this is one of those times when it is truth.
