SALLY PACHOLOK, is a film based on real life ER nurse Sally Pacholok who was forced to take on the medical establishment after uncovering an epidemic of B12 deficiency misdiagnoses. Director Elissa Leonard and leading actress Annet Mahendru discuss how they got involved with the film’s creation as well as the dangerous and fatal results of misdiagnosis in the medical world in this episode of Media Mayhem, hosted by Allison Hope Weiner.
FILM & GUEST BIO:
When nurse Sally Pacholok learns that her recent bouts of dizziness and fatigue are the result of a B-12 deficiency, she tries unsuccessfully to educate doctors at her hospital about this debilitating, often fatal condition, which mimics multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, dementia, and a host of better-known diseases. As she watches misdiagnosed patients wasting away and dying, she decides to write a book. Based on a true story.
Director Elissa Leonard is the director, writer and producer of Sally Pacholok. Leonard was also the producer of two episodes of the TV series Powerhouse (1982) and the writer and producer of the television series Innovation (1982-1988).
Actress, Annet Mahendru, was born to an Indian father (a journalist and professor) and Russian mother (a businesswoman and artist). Annet spent her early years learning six languages while living in Afghanistan, Russia, and Europe. At age 11, Annet choreographed a performance that gained her an appearance on German TV as a graceful Russian snow maiden that turns into a playful Indian dancer. Annet finished high school in New York and received a Bachelor of Arts in English at St. John's University. Annet took classes at HB studio, performed in plays, and Indie films. She decided to drop out of NYU and escaped to the West Coast where she began studies at the Groundlings School and took on several comedy projects thereafter. Annet is best known for her starring role in the 2013 TV series The Americans, where she plays the role "Nina," the beautiful and mysterious spy opposite FBI Agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich). Other credits include 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Big Time Rush, The Blacklist, and feature films Escape From Tomorrow, and Love Gloria.
