Those are a couple of examples of what the show talked about, and there were a lot more out there.
Sliders
Nearly an infinite number of storylines, but I think they started to get stale after the first 2 seasons, which is why it gets an 8/10.
Still a lot of fun, and very clever.

Perhaps a group of friends discover some old abandoned technology that turns out to be the Slider technology that allows people to travel between alternate dimensions/parallel universes. They could bring back one of the original characters for a short time to help explain what's going on."
