The Baronets of Ruddigore have been cursed by a witch. Each in turn is compelled to commit one crime per day or die an agonising death. The latest Baronet, Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd, disguises himself as a farmer, Robin Oakapple, and tries to flee. It seems to work, with "Robin" living a normal life and falling in love with Rose Maybud who he plans to marry. But his true identity is in danger of being revealed.
