Favorite Britcoms?

Kimi 17 years, 9 months ago at Oct 2 15:32 -
I have several Britcoms that I would like to add to my collection or complete the collection and a few of those faves would be:

-Are You Being Served? (I need Series 6-10 to complete!)
-As Time Goes By (Prefer the episodes once a relationship is re-established)
-Good Neighbors/Good Life (Need the final season)
-Keeping Up Appearances (Have Volumes 1-4, I believe I need 5-8?)
-Are You Being Served? Again! (Grace & Favour) (Own complete series)

I also enjoy, One Foot In the Grave and Vicar of Dibley, but not sure I enjoy enough episodes to purchase the entire series or parts of any collection of the series.

Oh gosh... I love these! Are You Being Served is my favorite and As Time Goes By is excellent as well. I wasn't too fond of the latter AYBS series though. The Vicar of Dibley is good.
And how can you not like Fawlty Towers and 'Allo 'Allo?

I watch Keeping Up Appearances, Are You Being Served?, and As Time Goes By every weekend on PBS! I especially love Keeping Up Appearances, and now that I know the series are available, I might go on a quest to buy them.

I love the Britcoms, it's funny, I was a little slow warming up to them, then about 15 years ago or a little less, I was battling pneumonia and got hooked on, Are You Being Served? and it's been a blast, ever since!

The Young Ones

and almost everything that starred Rick Mayall: Bottom, the new statesman and he also did an excellent childrens program where he read stories

Was The Young Ones, the series that MTV showed 12-15 years ago? I seem to recall this aired late at night and I could sit and watch this once I got home from my second shift job.

Well Kimi,

The show started in the early eighties and BBC UK (available on cable in mainland Europe) aired it throughout the eighties and the nineties.

www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/y/youngonesthe_1299003473.shtml

It was co-written by Ben Elton who by now is an established writer (of books that is)

At the time it was groundbreaking television and the BBC almost scrapped it because of the 'moral' objections of the 'general' public

I loved The young Ones, though it's dated pretty badly. Their follow up 'Filthy Rich and Catflap' was quite poor. I enjoyed some of 'The Comic Strip Presents' especially 'Mr Jolly Lives Next Door' (with Peter Cook) and 'More Bad News', a kind of rip off of Spinal Tap, but still makes me laugh.

Are You Being Served was a favorite of mine growing up. It's weird how all the racy sexual humor went completely over my head back then, so when I watch it now it's almost as if I'm watching it for the first time. Great show.

Red Dwarf and Father Ted top my list. I just wish I could get My Hero on DVD in the U.S.

I'm not in the UK, so I have limited access to britcoms, but the one's I've seen and loved are Coupling (only season 1 to 3: season 4 jumped the shark), The Office (its a toss up which is better, the UK or the US version. Both are a bit unique and hilarious in their own ways, as jokes are different), Black Adder (all series, but mostly Black Adder II and III), and Top Gear (only been following them past 2 seasons). Top Gear is hilarious, I consider it a britcom, not a car show.

Britcoms? You mean British TV Comedy? Try Spaced, Phoenix Nights, Black Books, Peep Show, Brass Eye, The Day Today, The Adam and Joe Show and The League of Gentlemen. Amongst others.

To those in the US and in love with British comedy such as Are You Being Served and 'Allo 'Allo, I storngly urge you to start importing from amazon's uk branch, get a region free player and buy the recently released Complete Carry On film collection, otherwise you could get a US collection of their earlier films. Are You Being Served and shows of the ilk are heavily influenced by this film series and Carry On is a must for all lovers of double entendre. Also pick up Carry On Christmas, a collection f Christmas Specials. Also available in the US but also available in the Complete Carry On (which does not include the Christmas specials) is a collection of the tv series Carry On Laughing. While I like this show, do not let it be your judge of the film series which is vastly superior.

Keeping Up Appearances is AWESOME. :D A lot of the other ones you guys have mentioned are great too, but I think that one takes the cake.
statler 17 years, 6 months ago at Dec 13 22:12 -
If one would take the cake, it must be Fawlty Towers, no competition.

As a Brit who now lives in the US I do miss some of our comedy shows but if you can get BBC America you can still enjoy Green Wing, SPACED, Little Britain and Blackadder.

I've never understood the staying power of Benny Hill or AYBS over in the US. It was funny as a kid growing up but c'mon. :-)

One comedy of ours which only I ever seem to remember, and is outrageously *still* not available on DVD, is Perfect World. I can't remember much about it, other than it was set in a pharmaceutical company's (I think) HO in Canary Wharf, and was very funny. Also, the chap who played Mr. Humphries in Are You Being Served? had a hilarious role in this.

Also, although it may not count as a sitcom, Puppet Access TV. That was bizarre, but very funny. In that, puppets lived alongside humans, but were just accepted, in the same way that it was never remarked upon in Rainbow that half the characters were puppets, and one was a giant teddy bear. I think one of the puppets was into S&M, and one tried to commit suicide by jumping from his bedroom window - but he was too light, so just floated down unharmed. Another was kidnapped and bundled into a car, and had his arms cut off. We later saw him with his stumps stitched up.

Being British, I have easy access to a lot of British comedies. :P My favourites include:

My Family
Smack the Pony
Red Dwarf
Father Ted
Fawlty Towers
The Vicar of Dibley
The Young Ones
Black Books
Monkey Dust
The League of Gentlemen
One Foot in the Grave

I really could go on and on, but there is too much to list. Just go check out my collection! :P Then there are all the British comedy panel shows!
