Alex was born in Sheffield. He went to Marlborough College, Cambridge University, where he read English, and trained at LAMDA. On television, he has appeared in many popular TV shows including New Tricks, Midsomer Murders, Silent Witness and Inspector Lynley.
He has also appeared in a number of major one-off television dramas, including Tom Hooper's Golden Globe winning film 'Longford' (opposite Jim Broadbent), Debbie Tucker Green's BAFTA winning film 'Random', Pinochet in Suburbia (opposite Michael Maloney) and Prime Suspect: The Final Act (opposite Helen Mirren).
