The seventh instalment in the on-going movie series, David Carson's Star Trek: Generations (1994) is the first film to feature the characters of The Next Generation along with the original cast. This chapter sees Captain Kirk passing the torch over to the newly anointed Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), who finds himself entangled with a powerful gravimetric force at the end of the galaxy and the enigmatic Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell). McCarthy, who scored the 1987 pilot of Star Trek-The Next Generation ("Encounter at Farpoint"), provides the film with an exhilarating combination of symphonic and electronic materials. The score sustains a wide range of textures from inchoate terror to a warm but restrained emotionalism. Moreover, the parallel motion between Carson's images and the music corresponds with an inconspicuous but telling wit reflected by the performances of the Enterprise crew members both past and present. Highlights include the robust "Overture," a moving depiction of "Kirk's Death" and the new-age dreamscapes of "Nexus." The finest moment of the score, however, is the haunting "A Christmas Hug," in which Picard sacrifices eternal joy to save his comrades. McCarthy also makes effective use of Alexander Courage's original television fanfare throughout. As a bonus, the disc features a 15-minute sound effects library compiled from the original soundtrack. All in all, a solid feature film debut by the veteran television composer. --Kevin Mulhall
