Tender and tenuous, Beautysleep is more reliable, unsettling excellence. Tanya Donelly has crafted askew, spacious dream-pop from Throwing Muses through the Breeders and Belly to her solo debut, 1997's folksy and winsome Lovesongs For Underdogs. Five years on, she's returned with a set of spectral songs that are easily superior to that tentative venture. Where Lovesongs... was pretty yet often underwhelming, Beautysleep is a haunting record pregnant with intimations of mortality. Minimalist yet compelling opener "Life Is But A Dream" unfolds in a deep reverie around a motif of an amplified heartbeat:
