Description: A key entry in the "renaissance" of the New Zealand film industry, Smash Palace stars Bruno Lawrence as an ex-racing champ. Returning home to take over his late father's business, Lawrence finds that his sophisticated European wife Anna Jemison is bored beyond measure at her new existence. She throws him over in favor of his best friend, policeman Keith Aberdein. Lawrence might have been able to weather his wife's leaving him, but it is too much to bear when she takes their daughter with her. "Directed by: Roger Donaldson Al Shaw's life revolves around motor racing and his back country junkyard, the "Smash Palace". His French wife, Jacqui, doesn't appreciate the lack of attention due to Al's obsession with cars. When Al finds her in the arms of another man, he takes his daughter, Georgie and heads for the bush, desperately hoping to hold on to the only family he has left."

"January 13th Directed by: Roger Donaldson There was no way for me to know what I was getting into here, this was not even close to what I expected. I don't want to give away much but it somehow is and is not as bombastic as the title and imagery suggests. It mostly isn't. There are so many strange decisions in how the main character acts, and where the story goes it makes for a completely unique experience, though I am reminded of Five Easy Pieces for some reason.
