Mrs. Miniver (1942)
Most of the movies in this list are more "Home Front" movies than "Front Line" movies. Mrs. Miniver is a perfect example. Oh, it's still much too glamorous, but there is just something about this movie that makes you wish you have done your part for WWII.

A full fairy tale, from ideal life, to prisoners of war, to life afterwards. Makes you laugh, makes you cry, everything a girl could want in a movie. Also easy to identify with the main characters.

I still consider this the best movie made in the last 50 years. But it is less about war than it is about genocide. Still, I should think most everyone can find something in this movie that brings war and human atrocities to a personal level.

Courage Under Fire (1996)
First real movie about a woman in combat. Good tension, well rounded story just wish there had been less court room scenes.
nataliegoes's rating:

A soldier has an interesting experience, getting to know the other soldiers, the locals, the brass, etc. Interesting take on war.

The Railway Man (2013)
Good story about dealing with the aftermath of a soldier's devastating experience during war.
The Hurt Locker (2008)
Excellent movie - just a guy doing his job. Sometimes stressful sometimes boring. Having to deal with switching it on and off, gave me a real insight into a soldiers life.
nataliegoes's rating:

Richard III (1995)
Talks about the personality that desires war for power, rather than the usual war as a last resort.

Red Dawn (1984)
First time I saw a war movie where I thought it could actually apply to me.

War movies tend to bore me. Things blowing up, body parts flying, blood, cursing, etc. Boring. I cannot relate. However there are some war movies that make you think, or I can identify with. Here are those movies.
