Nacho Libre (2006)
I'm not a huge Jack Black fan. I didn't really like School Of Rock. I don't even like the subjects of this film - sport and religion.
The soundtrack is awesome and it fits the style so well. What does it take to become a costumed luchador? Determination.

Sucker Punch (2011)
Another 'girls kicking butt' movie with low ratings! Shame! The video game style of Sucker Punch is done so well, with the alternative realities and costumes and mini-missions. My favourite scene is the first fight scene with Baby Doll at the temple.

Gentlemen Broncos (2009)
Oh did you think Napoleon Dynamite was weird? That was normal compared to this movie. Gentlemen Broncos flutters between the story of a young writer and his fiction that is ruthlessly stolen by a published author and passed off as his own, and then a terrible movie is made from it. It's so weird I don't know what rating to give it but it's definitely worth more than 5.8 stars.
Could be a still from a low-budget 60s porno, but it's Gentleman Broncos.

Pleasantville (1998)
IMDB got it right here with 7.5 stars, but Listal ratings are just 0.1 star lower than they ought to be.
Pleasantville is an example of how to do black-and-white and colour in the same movie. The colour changes are linked to the theme of innocence vs experience, cleverly set in a meta-world of 50s sitcom.

The Fall (2006)
One of my all-time favourite movies. The plot blends together post-(civil) war reality with childhood fantasy and early filmmaking and storytelling.
Pain and art merge into adventure. The colours and costumes and sets are beyond compare.

The Life of David Gale (2003)
The ending! This is what suspense mystery thrillers should be like, and to think I saw this on tv by chance. Worth 8 stars for that unforeseen twist ending.

What Lies Beneath (2000)
One of my favourite horror films. Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfieffer do a really good job. The bathtub scene still haunts me!

Another favourite movie. Swinton gives an excellent performance as a young 17th Century nobleman, a British ambassador in Constantinople, a Victorian lady and finally a modern mother.

Death to Smoochy (2002)
Robin Williams again? Yep. But this time Edward Norton takes the biscuit. Ignore the dumb poster and weird name, the movie is on a really unusual topic presented very well.
zokkor's rating:
Sunshine (2007)
A space mission in the future? With a legitimate mission? And no aliens to scare the shit out of me??? AND a good twist?? I can be quoted as saying this movie is on par with Apollo 13.

One Hour Photo (2002) (2002)
Visually stunning. The story is sad, well of course it is, it's about a really pathetic human being. This very well-told story is one of Robin Williams' best performances.

Young Adult (2011)
It has been criticized for lack of character development -- but I think this is its strength. The bitter, asocial protagonist doesn't change. It's not a fairytale, and that's what I really like about this movie. It's a cynical portrayal of a cynical person.

The low-budget style is very strong here, something I would usually detest; but it really works. The story is told through webcam interaction and conversation between the two best friends.

An American Crime (2007)
This film is meant to be shocking. I can see how you could be put off by such torture but I think the true event this is based on was much worse. This movie deserves 8 stars because it could easily have been torture porn, but it isn't. It's a story of hate.
zokkor's rating:
ParaNorman (2012)
This movie's only fault is that it follows the linear path of 'hero causes problem then solves problem'. I've seen Paranorman described as a new Coraline (made by the same people) but Paranorman isn't half as dark as Coraline. Just because it has wings, that doensn't mean it's a bird. Just because it's about dead people, that doesn't mean it's a horror film. Funny, touching, entertaining and so well-made... Paranorman is a solid 8 stars.

Jennifer's Body (2009)
Isn't this worth at least 6 stars? It is very well-shot, exploring the deteriorating relationship between two girls.
zokkor's rating:
Exam (2010)
A well-executed "bottle" movie where everything takes place in one room. Have you ever played on of those 'escape the room' games? This movie is like that, the characters have to use the room to their advantage, to figure out what they are really being tested for.
zokkor's rating:
Mama (2013)
Ok I will admit that the ending was bonkers. So put that aside and listen to why this is worth more than 6 stars:
-The creepy way the girls walk on all fours
-The scary as fuck face of Mama
-Mama's hyperextended limbs
-Jessica Chastain's human & believable stepmother character overthrowing the evil stepmother trope (you go girl)
-The young actresses do a really really good job of being good at acting where a lot of child actors do not
Final word - I watched this back to back with Stoker and I preferred Mama.

Tank Girl (1995)
Hmmmmmm why is it that a movie with two ass-kicking ladies at it's centre gets such low ratings? As a 13-year-old-girl I thought it was awesome to see ladies fighting for once, instead of getting saved. Although the 90s visuals are so hard to stomach.
zokkor's rating:
Odd Thomas (2013)
Solid 8 star movie here. The beginning abruptly thrusts the viewer into Thomas' world, and so it should. I can't stand movies that waste time faffing about before they really begin. Odd Thomas is weird, and once you accept that you can appreciate how creepy it is. The diner scene with the bodachs had me frozen in horror. The investigation of Fungus Man, and the following twist, integrated the hardboiled detective genre into the movie. Oh and the ending! Ah gut-wrenching. A really well-told story with decent characters.

Chernobyl Diaries (2012)
Just 5 stars really?? Guys this is a horror film. It has scary humanoid monsters, lots of decent scares, a killer creepy setting, and the movie isn't afraid of killing off characters. The ending is good too! What more could you want? I am a horror snob and I think it deserves 7 stars.
zokkor's rating:
The imaginary reaction scenes are so hilariously tragic! I think if there was more of them it would get higher ratings. And maybe a little less meandering with the secondary character. It's like an American version of My Mad Fat Diary, without the 90s music, with some insane projectile vomiting!
zokkor's rating:
This is a collection of movies that deserve higher ratings. It is mostly made up of movies scoring lower on both IMDB and Listal than they deserve. Tell me what you think in the comments.
