Total Film's 50 Amazing Foreign Movie Rip-offs

Sort by: Showing 49 items
Decade: Rating: List Type:
People who added this item 8 Average listal rating (4 ratings) 5.8 IMDB Rating 3.2
The Hollywood Original: E.T.

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Badi (1983)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Where do we begin? First, the Elliot of this film has an abusive father, which is played for laughs. Also, at one point a policeman shoots a dog dead and it looks like this might have been done for real in the film. Oh yeah, and the alien Badi himself is ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. He looks like a giant condom filled with snakes and then shaped to look like a small child.
The Hollywood Original: Star Wars

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: DĂŒnyayı Kurtaran Adam (1985) - "The Man Who Saved The World"

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Even though the film uses actual footage from Star Wars space battles, everything else is completely different. There's an evil wizard, some skeletons, some ninjas, some zombies and a gladiatorial arena. The hero ends up defeating the wizard by melting down a golden sword and a golden human brain into a pair of magical gloves and super-jumping boots. Y'know, that old chestnut.
People who added this item 5 Average listal rating (3 ratings) 5 IMDB Rating 4.4
Mahakaal (1994)
The Hollywood Original: A Nightmare On Elm Street

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Mahakaal: The Monster (1993)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Mahakaal is still a vicious demon killer who slaughters young people in their dreams, but it's all been Bollywoodised, so he's all-singing and all-dancing too. It sounds odd, but imagine Freddy Krueger in a production of Cats. Who doesn't want to see that?
People who added this item 8 Average listal rating (3 ratings) 5.7 IMDB Rating 4.5
Seytan (1974)
The Hollywood Original: The Exorcist

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Seytan (1974), which is perhaps a little on-the-nose.

Biggest Deviation From Canon: It's practically a shot-for-shot remake but, disappointingly, the pea-soup projectile vomit has been replaced here with just a tiny bit of sick. Nothing that a small napkin can't handle.
The Hollywood Original: Star Wars

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: The title literally translates as "The Tramps And The Planet War" (1978).

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Despite featuring Chewie, Darth Vader and a host of other characters, the central stars of this spoof are three hobos who hit each other and dry-hump props. It sounds like George Lucas saw this and immediately created the character of Jar Jar.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 5
The Hollywood Original: Spider-Man (any of them)

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: ÖrĂŒmcek Adam (1966)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: The film bears zero resemblance to our beloved webcrawler. Instead, there’s a candid mix of fights, babes, motorbikes and a bald villain with a wonderful, thick moustache. There’s not even an Aunt May.
People who added this item 10 Average listal rating (6 ratings) 6.3 IMDB Rating 5.9
The Hollywood Original: Rambo

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: The Intruder (1986)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Where Sly Stallone’s John Rambo relies on bowie knives and machine guns to dispatch the enemy, this film’s hero – the coincidentally-named Rambu – does so with a single tennis ball in one scene. Sure, the ball seems to have magical boomerang-type powers, but it’s still more efficient than bullets. Probably.
People who added this item 8 Average listal rating (3 ratings) 4.3 IMDB Rating 5.7
The Hollywood Original: Popeye

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: The Dragon Lives Again (1977)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Released to cash in on the popularity of Bruce Lee after his death, this film tells the story of Lee in the underworld, where he befriends Caine from TV show Kung Fu and cartoon sailor Popeye. Together they fight Dracula, James Bond, Clint Eastwood and The Godfather among others. Let's be honest, this sounds like the greatest dream of all time.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 4.3
The Hollywood Original: Batman

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Bathman Dal Pianeta Eros (1982)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: So this may be one of those pornographic films we've heard about but, even still, the artistic licence taken here is shocking. Batman is no longer millionaire Bruce Wayne on a personal mission to rid Gotham of crime. No, here he is an alien from the planet Eros, who, along with his now-female sidekick 'Robina' team up to basically have sex with everyone in sight. Oh, and it starts with a really long shot of Batman riding a bicycle through a field. Because SEXY.
People who added this item 12 Average listal rating (7 ratings) 6.9 IMDB Rating 5.3
Jai Ho (2014)
The Hollywood Original: My Cousin Vinny

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Banda Yeh Bindass Hai (2014)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Whatever the differences are, they weren't big enough to save the filmmakers from being served with a legal notice in 2009 by 20th Century Fox, which has delayed the film's release for several years. Unfortunately, the case was settled out of court, denying the filmmakers a chance to hire Joe Pesci lookalikes as their lawyers and really have some fun.
People who added this item 4 Average listal rating (3 ratings) 4 IMDB Rating 0
The Hollywood Original: Rocky

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Kara Simsek (1985), which translates as the awesome “Black Thunder”.

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Here, our underdog champion is a strongman who only becomes a boxer in order to avenge the death of his brother, who was killed during a bout. Really, it’s the kind of motivation our Rocky could have really needed to spur him on and win a little earlier.
People who added this item 30 Average listal rating (21 ratings) 5.3 IMDB Rating 3.7
The Hollywood Original: Death Wish

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Cellat (1975) – “The Executioner”

Biggest Deviation From Canon: In the original, Charles Bronson’s vigilante never manages to find the thugs that killed his wife and raped his daughter, but here, our anti-hero tracks them down and finishes them off one-by-one. He still carries a sockful or coins though.
People who added this item 10 Average listal rating (7 ratings) 5.4 IMDB Rating 0
The Hollywood Original: King Kong

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: The brilliantly named A*P*E (1976).

Biggest Deviation From Canon: After swatting down a couple of toy helicopters, our A*P*E - in a shocking flash of implausible intelligence - flips his attackers the bird. Andy Serkis would have loved filming that.
People who added this item 18 Average listal rating (10 ratings) 3.6 IMDB Rating 2.5
Ape (1976)
The Hollywood Original: Mad Max

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: ÖlĂŒme son Adim (1986) – “Last Stop To Death”

Biggest Deviation From Canon: In this version, Mad Max (actually named Kahan here) brings along his best friend Ali for the ride, as well as female friend Leyla, whose only skill seems to be the ability to kick ass while wearing almost zero clothing.
People who added this item 4 Average listal rating (3 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 5.5
The Hollywood Original: Planet Of The Apes

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Saru No Gundan (1987) - "Time Of The Apes"

Biggest Deviation From Canon: For all the effort spent on creating similar ape costumes, they might as well be ventriloquists because none of their mouths move when they speak.
People who added this item 10 Average listal rating (8 ratings) 2.3 IMDB Rating 0
The Hollywood Original: Beauty And The Beast

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Also called Beauty And The Beast, but it’s probably a coincidence.

Biggest Deviation From Canon: It’s virtually a shot-for-shot remake of the Disney classic animation, apart from Beast looks more like Simba from The Lion King. Maybe he was easier to draw?
The Hollywood Original: Hamlet (hardly a ‘Hollywood original’, but still)

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: İntikam Meleği – Kadın Hamlet (1977), which translates as “The Angel Of Vengeance – The Female Hamlet”

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Apart from the obvious, you mean? Well, at one point a female Rosencrantz and Guildenstern take Hamlet to the beach, where they all play volleyball in their bikinis. Now, stick this version on the secondary school syllabus and you get kids learning.
People who added this item 39 Average listal rating (29 ratings) 6.2 IMDB Rating 5.8
Partner (2007)
The Hollywood Original: Hitch

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Partner (2007)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Hitch is replaced by Prem, a supposed ‘love guru’, who falls in love with a widowed, single mother but can’t win her over. Judging purely on the picture above, we can see why.
People who added this item 106 Average listal rating (73 ratings) 7.9 IMDB Rating 8.2
The Hollywood Original: Winnie The Pooh

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Vinni Pukh (1969)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Despite opting not to use E.H. Shepard's famous illustrations and going for a distinctly less fluffy depiction, this version of the character stays true to A.A. Milne's original text. Only, rather than being spoken in Winnie's familiar, lilting voice, they are barked out in Vinni's intimidating, militant shouts.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 6.2
Kartal yuvasi (1974)
The Hollywood Original: Straw Dogs

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Kartal Yuvasi (1974)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Dustin Hoffman’s wimp-turned-badass David Sumner has been replaced with an elderly woman. Many of the other themes are present, but they are twisted here to reflect the ill-feelings between Greece and Turkey at the time over the Turkish Muslim community being forced out of Cyprus. And, just in case these parallels are too subtle for the audience to appreciate, the ending of the film is edited together with real footage of Turkish troops invading Cyprus, which was happening at the time of production. Way to get your point across.
The Hollywood Original: Home Alone

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Hari Puttar: A Comedy Of Terrors (2008)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: It follows the Macaulay Culkin classic pretty strictly, with two bungling burglars being foiled by a young kid left at home (although not alone – he is with cousin Tuk Tuk), but in this case the burglars are trying to steal a secret formula created by his father. Imagine that – an entirely new formula being created from scratch. Ah, sweet irony.
People who added this item 67 Average listal rating (39 ratings) 7 IMDB Rating 5.6
The Hollywood Original: The Terminator

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Lady Terminator (1989)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Other than the gender-swap? In this case, she is the reincarnation of an ancient killer called the Queen of the South Sea. Oh, and she kills men with sex. Otherwise, it’s all very similar to James Cameron’s killer cyborg story. There’s even a shoot-up in a nightclub. But lots of sex too, obviously.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 6.6
The Hollywood Original: Some Like It Hot

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Fistik Gibi Masallah (1964) – “Thank God She’s Cute”

Biggest Deviation From Canon: In this version, our cross-dressing leads both fall for the same girl, which means twice as much gender-swapping hilarity!
People who added this item 40 Average listal rating (20 ratings) 6.7 IMDB Rating 6
Future Cops (1993)
The Hollywood Original: Street Fighter

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Future Cops (1993)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Ripped off from the successful game as opposed to the movie that we all know (which was released six months later), Future Cops still manages to play fast and loose with the plot and characters. The most fundamental example of which is when the characters travel back in time from 2043 to 1993 by um... catching a plane there. God only knows in what year their luggage ended up.
People who added this item 27 Average listal rating (19 ratings) 6.2 IMDB Rating 5
Aisha (2010)
The Hollywood Original: Clueless

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Aisha (2010)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Well, heroines from both films are extremely popular and try to set up their friends with each other and, when their plans backfire, they learn to be better people, apologise to their friends and get the guy they’ve fallen for. So there’s not an awful lot that’s different. But then, Clueless was based on Jane Austen’s Emma anyway, so really, who’s ripping off who?
People who added this item 8 Average listal rating (7 ratings) 5.1 IMDB Rating 5.7
The Hollywood Original: Tarzan

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Tarzan In Istanbul (1952)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: It’s the standard Tarzan story, but a lot of the wild animal scenes were filmed in a nearby zoo, leading to some shots of big cats in what is pretty obviously some kind of animal enclosure.
People who added this item 27 Average listal rating (14 ratings) 6.5 IMDB Rating 6.6
Spider-Man (1978)
The Hollywood Original: Spider-Man (any of them)

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Supaidaman (1978)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Daily Bugle photographer Peter Parker becomes motorcyclist Takuya Yamashiro. And, rather get bitten by a radioactive spider, Takuya's superpowers come from a magical bracelet given to him by a telepathic spider-like alien. Someone in Hollywood needs to rip-off THIS film right now.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 5.6
The Hollywood Original: Mel Brooks's classic Young Frankenstein

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Sevimli Frankenstein (1975)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Well, for one thing, it's not funny. Unless you count the dodgy mask used to convey Frankenstein's monster.
People who added this item 1 Average listal rating (1 ratings) 3 IMDB Rating 6.3
Do Kaliyaan (1968)
The Hollywood Original: The Parent Trap (1961 version)

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Do Kaliyaan (1968)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: It’s the old ‘twin siblings discover each other and swap places in order to set their parents up’ tale, so there’s not much that’s changed. Neither feature a still-innocent Lindsay Lohan, and neither are as good as TV show Sister, Sister.
The Hollywood Original: Superman

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: SĂŒpermen DönĂŒyor (1979) – “The Return of Superman”

Biggest Deviation From Canon: There’s no real villain to speak of, just a bunch of gangster-type henchmen. Perhaps that’s why Superman shows a casual disregard for their life? At one point he impales one baddie with a steel pipe, and he forces another to walk off a bridge. Still, he gets results.
People who added this item 1 Average listal rating (1 ratings) 8 IMDB Rating 3.9
Aatank (1996)
The Hollywood Original: Jaws

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Aatank (1996)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: The human shriek that the shark makes is pretty bewildering, but we'll have to go with the horrifyingly gruesome shark-related death of the film's leading lady mid-musical number.
The Hollywood Original: The Wizard Of Oz

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: AyƟecik ve Sihirli CĂŒceler RĂŒyalar Ülkesinde (1971), which translates as - SPOILER ALERT - "Little AyƟe and the Magic Dwarfs in the Land of Dreams".

Biggest Deviation From Canon: There are lots of sexual overtones in this film that are lacking in the beloved 1939 classic. But while the magic dwarves are constantly ogling this much more 'of age' Dorothy, the most surprising flirtations have to be that between the scarecrow and the tin man.
People who added this item 8 Average listal rating (5 ratings) 5.8 IMDB Rating 4
The Hollywood Original: Batman

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Betmen Yarasa Adam (1973) (and not, unfortunately, Betmen Yarasa Adam West)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: In this version, Bruce Wayne doesn't seem to be all that rich. Instead of fancy gadgets and vehicles and a cape, this dark knight drives around in a normal car and shoots criminals dead. He's basically the terrifying, sociopathic vigilante that any real-life Batman would be.
People who added this item 1 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 7.3
Donga (1985)
The Hollywood Original: Michael Jackson's mini-movie music video for Thriller.

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Donga (1985)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: This is actually a regular Bollywood movie (the title translates as 'Thief'), but it just so happens that one of the musical numbers steals the look, choreography and apparent wardrobe of Jacko's version.
The Hollywood Original: The Empire Strike Back (kind of – it’s basically a sequel to the first Turkish Star Wars rip-off)

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Dunyayi Kurtaran Adam’in Oglu (2006), translated as “Son Of The The Man Who Saves The World”, but otherwise known simply as ‘Turks In Space’.

Biggest Deviation From Canon: The entire film is a deviation really. Based purely on the success of the first Turkish Star Wars, this film is a follow-up made 20 years later and is supposed to be a comedy in which the son of the hero from the first film has to save the day. Most disappointingly, it doesn’t even reuse George Lucas’ own Star Wars footage like this film’s predecessor did. It’s like the filmmakers don’t even know why we enjoy making fun of these films.
People who added this item 6 Average listal rating (4 ratings) 8.3 IMDB Rating 4.3
Vahsi kan (1983)
The Hollywood Original: First Blood

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Vahsi Kan (1983)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Aside from the lead’s reliance on his martial arts skills, this film is very similar in tone to First Blood. Although, the beginning is quite different, which, in this case, sees a woman’s family killed by zombie bikers, setting the rest of the film in motion.
People who added this item 20 Average listal rating (16 ratings) 5.6 IMDB Rating 5.3
The Hollywood Original: My Best Friend’s Wedding

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Meri Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai (2002), which literally translates as “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, because at this point the filmmakers were laughing in the face of copyright law.

Biggest Deviation From Canon: In this instance, it’s the male hero who decides that he has fallen in love with his female and sets about ruining her wedding. Still doesn’t make it right.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 0
The Hollywood Original: Any film featuring Lassie.

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Mavi Boncuk Lassi (1971)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: The story of a kid and his brave dog – what could be different? It could even be the same dog for all we know.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 5.8
The Hollywood Original: The Magnificent Seven

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Yedi Belalilar (1970)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: We all know that The Magnificent Seven itself borrows liberally from Seven Samurai, so really who can complain about the similar storylines? Still, the frequent use of Turkish progressive rock music is a bit of a change in style.
People who added this item 7 Average listal rating (5 ratings) 6.6 IMDB Rating 7.4
The Hollywood Original: Star Trek (technically the original series)

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Turist Ömer Uzay Yolunda (1973) - "Ömer the Tourist in Star Trek"

Biggest Deviation From Canon: The film is actually an almost word-for-word remake of original series episode The Man Trap, but with one added element: Ömer, a normal everyday hobo, has accidentally been beamed aboard the Enterprise and mistaken for a salt-vampire killer.
People who added this item 14 Average listal rating (6 ratings) 7.7 IMDB Rating 5.2
Çöl (1983)
The Hollywood Original: Jaws

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Çöl (1983) – “The Desert”

Biggest Deviation From Canon: In this case, our ‘Brody’ is somewhat of an action hero, fighting criminals and having high-speed car chases. It’s only really the last part of the film that resembles Jaws (even though John Williams’ theme is played throughout), during which our hero is captured and left out to sea, forced to fend for himself against a giant plastic shark.
People who added this item 1 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 5.1
Dariya Dil (1988)
The Hollywood Original: Superman

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Dariya Dil (1988)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: A popular YouTube clip from this film in which Indian Superman dances with indian Spiderwoman is bewildering enough, but not as much as the fact that this film is actually a family drama about tax evasion with that one bizarre sequence featuring superhero shenanigans.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 6.2
The Hollywood Original: I Spit On Your Grave

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Intikam Kadini (1979) – “A Woman Like That”

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Well, there’s not an awful lot of material to deviate from, is there? A woman gets raped and takes her revenge on her attackers. The main difference here is that all of the sex scenes are presented as softcore porn, which really goes against the whole idea of the film.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 4.9
Kelepçe (1982)
The Hollywood Original: Dirty Harry

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Kelepçe (1982)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: This violent cop relies less on his .44 Magnum and more on his martial arts skills as he launches a one-man mission to defeat the drug smugglers terrorising his city. Sadly, he also finds out that his own son is a drug addict. (*sad trombone*).
People who added this item 65 Average listal rating (44 ratings) 7.3 IMDB Rating 7
Hum Tum (2004)
The Hollywood Original: When Harry Met Sally

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: The lovely sounding Hum Tum (2004)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Everything is pretty much exactly the same, apart from the male lead is a comic-book writer and his two characters, Hum and Tum, have animated sequences throughout the film that represent the state of the characters’ relationship at that time. Basically, it’s filled with cartoons.
People who added this item 0 Average listal rating (0 ratings) 0 IMDB Rating 7.4
The Hollywood Original: Any film starring Laurel and Hardy

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Tosun ile Yosun (1963), which we imagine comes from the two central characters, Tosun and Yosun.

Biggest Deviation From Canon: It’s essentially two people who kind of look like Laurel and Hardy, acting like Laurel and Hardy, so there’s not much deviation from the formula. Although, the belly dancing is a little unusual, we suppose.
People who added this item 2 Average listal rating (2 ratings) 3.5 IMDB Rating 6.5
The Hollywood Original: Goldfinger (or, really, any early James Bond film)

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Altin Çocuk (1966), which translates as “Golden Boy”.

Biggest Deviation From Canon: It’s kind of a mash-up of lots of early Bond adventures, complete with a Blofeld-alike villain, but the 007 façade slips slightly when our Turkish James Bond goes to the bar and orders “A beer. A BIG one”.
People who added this item 39 Average listal rating (26 ratings) 3.8 IMDB Rating 3.6
Reptilicus (1961)
The Hollywood Original: Godzilla

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: Reptilicus (1961)

Biggest Deviation From Canon: The beast wipes out a machine gun crew with glowing green acidic venom. Only, thanks to a continuity error, they are all seen moments later still shooting at him.
People who added this item 33 Average listal rating (24 ratings) 4.5 IMDB Rating 0
The Hollywood Original: Captain America

The Amazing Foreign Rip-Off: 3 Dev Adam - which translates as "Three Mighty Men".

Biggest Deviation From Canon: Captain America teams up with Mexican wrestler El Santo to bring down deranged, money-laundering killer... um... Spider-Man. Maybe J. Jonah Jameson was right about him being a menace after all...
