Mickey 17 (2025)

Notes: Well, there was definitely some good stuff but, like many other lesser efforts from this director such as 'Okja', it was just too random for my taste. I mean, I have to admit that the randomness in his work is actually what makes it really stands out from the rest and it was downright amazing in 'Parasite' or 'Memories or Murder'. However, in this case, I just wish he did tone it down a bit though. Anyway, it did expect to see some solid science-fiction and to see Robert Pattinson playing several versions of the same character (which he did really well) but it didn't expect me to turn out to be such a virulent anti-Trump satire. Mark Ruffalo was also pitch-perfect and pretty much stole the show every time he was on the screen. Beside this satire, well, the rest of the movie was just too random for my taste though. For example, Pattinson was also pretty good playing the different Mickeys but his characters were just not consistent enough. I mean, in all variations, Mickey was pretty much a loser and it was the reason why the character was interesting to me. But towards the end, he/they became some kind of hero somehow which wasn't really satisfying. They also went for some happy ending which didn't seem earned, there was also some gangster chasing the main character, some kind of resistance movement and also some weird but apparently smart local creatures but all this stuff was either too much and/or not properly developed.

A Minecraft Movie (2025)

Notes: To be honest, I have to admit that I never played Minecraft, I did see some streaming sessions from a famous Dutch YouTuber playing this game but I can’t say I was really familiar with it. Well, I had heard that this movie had become a surprise success at the box-office and, indeed, I was surprised to see that the movie theater was actually full. What I didn’t know was that 90% of the people in the movie theater were some fans of the video game and, basically, every 5 mins, when they would drop some obscure random reference to the game, the whole place would erupt with clapping and cheering which was, I have to admit it, pretty awesome. But how was the movie actually? Well, pretty much like ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ which was another huge box-office hit and lot of fun for the fans, I’m afraid it was nothing really great after all. Sure, it did look fine but, story-wise, it was seriously lacking though. It was obvious that Jack Black had a total blast and the guy (almost) single-handedly made this movie quite entertaining. Unfortunately, I didn’t care much about the other characters though. Indeed, the 2 orphans were just too bland, I don’t even remember the name of the black lady played by Danielle Brooks and Garrett, who probably sounded great on paper, didn’t work so well after all. I mean, if you have already Jack Black playing Steve, a completely weird guy who apparently never grew up, did we also need a has-been master gamer from the 80’s? Probably not.

Notes: Unfortunately, it was possibly the weakest MCU film I have seen so far. It’s too bad because the first movie starring a black Captain America could have been a huge event. The issue with Captain America is that, pretty much like DC’s Superman, the character in itself is already actually pretty boring and, what was disheartening with this last movie, was that they managed to make this African-American version even more boring than the classic Caucasian version. To make it even worse, they gave him a completely bland supposedly wise-cracking sidekick who was so tedious obviously to make this Captain America slightly more charismatic than he actually was. Concerning the idea of going back to ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and bring back Samuel Sterns and Betty Ross, sure, why not? Unfortunately, the plot was just terribly generic and underwhelming. I mean, the Leader is/was supposed to be a super smart villain so the possibility were pretty much endless but then, he basically hypnotized random people so he could avenge himself which was probably one of the most predictable plots you could think of. Concerning the Red Hulk, they really put the character everywhere on the promotional material but, eventually, he only showed up during the last 20 mins and, to be honest, except for the color, he displayed exactly the same behavior as the classic green version so the character did feel rather pointless.

Snow White (2025)

Notes: The first thing that always annoys me was that most of these classic animated features were fairly short and, with these new versions, they feel compelled to extend the running time (in this case, it was barely 2 hrs but it didn’t bother me, in the contrary) but these extra scenes are never interesting or entertaining enough. The other failure with this movie was that they tried to convince the viewers that Rachel Zegler was actually more beautiful than Gal Gadot. I mean, sure, I have to admit that Zegler is quite cute but Gadot is probably one of the most beautiful women in the world. Of course, at some point, they pointed out that Snow White’s beauty was also from the inside and not only the outside but, if I would chose, I would go for the Evil Queen any day of the week. Furthermore, the way they tried to make Snow White an independent woman who didn’t need a prince to rescue her was an honorable attempt but what’s the point of adapting a classic fairy tale if you will it give such a modern spin? Is it then worth it remaking it if the core is actually really outdated? Eventually, the only update that really worked for me was the way they handled Dopey. Indeed, even if the character might have seemed harmless when you watched the animated feature as a child, this character was actually deeply offensive and I did appreciate how they try to rehabilitate him somehow.

The Electric State (2025)

Notes: Unfortunately, it turned out to be another abysmal blockbuster from Netflix (apparently, the damned thing did cost a staggering 300 million dollars). I mean, ‘The Gray Man’ was already hardly impressive but I thought this movie was even worse though. Where should I start? The concept of this conflict between robots and humans was seriously derivative and barely entertaining. I mean, I’m not saying that it is not a cool subject, I actually love science-fiction when it’s done properly but, in this case, they didn’t add anything interesting to the concept. Concerning the cast, Millie Bobby Brown is quite charismatic but, I’m sorry, her performance was just really weak here. Of course, the fact that the story was lame and her character was really poorly developed probably didn’t help either. At least, it got slightly better when Chris Pratt finally showed up with his wise-cracking robot (by the way, good luck recognizing Anthony Mackie behind this robotic voice) but, let’s be honest, his character was basically a cheap version of Star-Lord and, if you would switch his lines between this movie and any Guardians of the Galaxy instalment, you wouldn’t notice the difference. It’s also the kind of movie during which, after 90 mins, you’re checking your watch and despair about the fact that you still have 30 mins more to watch when it’s obvious that nothing else really major will really happen after that point.
