During the Season 1 finale of The Hills: New Beginnings, Kaitlynn Carter shared details about her open relationship with Brody Jenner. When asked by Ashley Wahler whether Jenner had ever slept with other women while he and Carter were together, Carter said, "Not without me being involved, OK? Everything with me and Brody is under my control, let's put it that way." Later, during a confessional, she added, "There's not one part of our relationship that I'm ashamed of or that I would do differently. I just think that the world isn't necessarily ready to hear about all that. Not everybody is so open-minded or accepting of other people."

The Italian actress who has been listed among the most beautiful women in various magazines for almost 30 years and her French husband lived in an open marriage as she stated to Style Magazine. After their divorce, she says their relationship is still amiable.

Actor Shailene Woodley explained that she has been in both monogamous and non-monogamous partnerships in her life while speaking to The New York Times in 2020.

“I'm someone who has experienced both an open relationship and a deeply monogamous relationship in my life.”

National treasure Thompson spoke candidly in a 2013 live web chat on Mumsnet about her thoughts on infidelity, according to the Daily Mail. 'I think that we're locked into certain ideas, and certain romantic ideals that have shaped our thinking about relationships for some time,' she said. 'And I do sometimes wonder about whether there are alternatives, and about whether our fury and rage and disbelief and horror about infidelity is quite realistic.

'All I’m suggesting is that there are other models and I’m also suggesting that we’d been a little bit caught by the happy-ever-after ideal.'

MacLaine married Parker, a producer, in 1954. The couple divorced in 1982, but MacLaine revealed in a 2016 People magazine interview that her marriage lasted 28 years because they practiced an open relationship:

"I guess you would say ‘practiced an open marriage’ in 1954, which was another lifetime," said MacLaine. "No one understood it, we did. He lived in Japan basically, I lived in America working, and this and that. I think that’s the basis for a long-lasting marriage if you really want to do such a thing."

In 2018, musician Kehlani wrote on Twitter that they were a "lil poly pansexual" though fans were left unclear if they were identifying as polyamorous or polysexual.

Later, in 2020, they appeared on The Breakfast Club and revealed that they had been in an open relationship with ex-flame YG when asked about alleged pictures of him "cheating" by kissing a woman outside of a club.

"That wasn't a rule-breaking situation. I just don't feel like getting online and deeply explaining that that is not a situation that matters to me then I gotta deal with everybody coming at my mentality about an open relationship."

The actor couple has been outspoken about their exploration of an open marriage and in 2021, Will Smith discussed it in an interview with GQ.

“The experiences that the freedoms that we've given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love.”

Flashback to the days of Brangelina – during a 2009 interview with Germany's Das Neue magazine, before the pair, who broke up in 2016, tied the knot, Jolie said: 'I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship. It's worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards.

'Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.'

The actor opened up to Playboy in 2018 about the importance of finding 'queer beings who understand me as a queer being off the bat" and integrating them into their polycule (an interconnected network of people in non-monogamous relationships with one another).

"Then they are in the squad—the polycule. And I know they’re going to love everyone else in the polycule because we’re in the polycule, and we love each other so much.”

Younger actor Nico Tortorella wrote an essay for them. in 2018 about their polyamorous marriage with activist Bethany Meyers.

“We became polyamorous without ever really trying, and we let each other go so often; I guess we finally realized it's the reason we are impenetrable."

While the trio are no longer together, Bella Thorne was publicly in a throuple with rapper Mod Sun and influencer Tana Mongeau from 2017 to 2019. She alluded to the relationship in an interview with Cosmopolitan US in 2019.

While Scottish actor Alan Cumming and longtime partner Grant Shaffer don't have an open relationship, Cumming certainly doesn't believe monogamy is a natural state. The Good Wife star said in an interview with Piers Morgan, "As a male animal, I don't think we are meant to be monogamous," said Cumming. "We think sexual infidelity is the worst betrayal, and there are much worse ways you can betray your partner."

In 2018, the Pose actor took to Twitter to open up about their identity, though did not clarify whether they were identifying as polyamorous or polysexual.

"So, I realised I’m poly"

During an interview on radio show, The Breakfast Club, Lizzo explained how she and partner Myke Wright have barely made their relationship public, explaining it as merely a "soft launch".

"We haven't done a red carpet yet, by the way. I just wanna point that out. That was an FYC [For Your Consideration]. This was a soft launch. I have to respect his privacy," she told the show's hosts.

But then, one of the show's hosts Charlamagne Tha God asked if she believes their relationship will last the next 10 years, to which Lizzo shared that she doesn't believe in monogamy.

"I think a traditional relationship scares me for 10 years, but love is forever. I can love somebody forever," the "About Time" singer said. "Monogamy, to me, is a little claustrophobic because there are rules. I think a love relationship that's not monogamous has no rules. I think people who do poly and all that stuff—there's still rules."

She continued, "I don't want any rules. But that doesn't mean I'm out here f--king and s--king and ducking. It doesn't mean he is either. It just means that there are no expectations, and that way, the love gets to just be the main event…. It's like, do what you wanna do, as long as you love me."

Then, the show's second host Angela Yee asked the musician if those circumstances would change if Wright did not want to be polyamorous, to which Lizzo replied, "We can still have that and not call it monogamy."

She continued, "It's just love. It's like, 'I just love you. I'm not worried about nobody else. I'm not worried about anybody else sexually, romantically, emotionally. I'm just worried about you. I'm just thinking about you.' I think that's what we have, which is the most beautiful, pure thing ever."

In her book, If Someone Says 'You Complete Me,' RUN!, published in 2015, Goldberg shares her views on open relationships: 'sometimes in a relationship, people can’t always get what they need, and if you have reputable people you can turn to in order to get what you need, I say go for it. It is a whole lot better than being frustrated and angry at the person you love.'

As famous for their 'conscious un-coupling' as they were for their, uh, coupling, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin reportedly had an open relationship during periods of their 10-year marriage.


A source allegedly told Access Hollywood: "If Chris was playing around, Gwyneth didn't care. She's never been jealous or territorial. Her philosophy is, 'We're both adults. We make our own choices.'"

Back in 2013, Cho made an appearance on The Real where she explained her open marriage to then-husband Al Ridenour. She elaborated a little more after being questioned about women being there with her husband at the same time that she's been in the house, to which she explained, "We have a really big house. It's kind of like if we wanna have that, it's like, 'You can stay on your side, or I'll stay on my side.' When I see her, I'll make her dinner...Oh yeah. I've definitely been in the house."

In 2020, musician Yungblud opened up about his sexuality in an interview with Attitude and discussed how his ex Halsey, who is openly bisexual, helped him explore his sexual identity.

"I probably would say now, I am polyamorous. Before I didn’t f***ing know what I was."

In January 2019, Mongeau took to her YouTube channel to explain the complexity of her polyamorous relationship with Thorne and Mod Sun. "It's funny because meeting Bella and going into it, in the beginning, I felt like there was this tension between Mod and I," she said. "Here I am just coming in and Bella wants me here but she has a whole a boyfriend and he wasn't my boyfriend and I didn't want him to be my boyfriend. He didn't want me to be his girlfriend. It was this weird thing of him and I sharing her. But after time, it became so harmonious and absolutely normal to us."

Later in the video, she added, "Being in that relationship taught me so much about myself and polyamory and openness and how close-minded the world can be — and how open-minded the world can be." After ending her relationship with Thorne in February 2019, Mongeau began an open relationship with fellow YouTuber Jake Paul.

Now, although Will and Jada might be the first couple you think of when it comes to an open marriage, Mo'Nique literally has a podcast called Open Relationship with her husband of 10 years, Sidney. This comes after her remarks in 2006 about being in an open relationship which led to relentless judgment and ignorant remarks on their marriage without knowing the nuances of how they make it work. This seems to be the catalyst for why Mo'Nique and her husband started the podcast to not only dive deeper into how they make their open marriage work but also how communicating each other's feelings is vital to keeping a healthy relationship. Though, in the beginning, there were other partners sexually, it seems their perspective of an "open relationship" has evolved, telling Essence, “So, it’s not just an open relationship from a sexual standpoint, it’s an open relationship in terms of dialogue that you’re having with your spouse, your mate, your sons, your daughters, your mothers, your father, because we always hear ‘be someone important' or ‘be yourself,’ but that’s only when it's politically correct — when you’ve fallen into the boundaries of what people expect you to be as opposed to you being yourself when it is against the preverbal norm, but what we find is against the norm is really the norm."

During an April 2013 interview with HuffPost Live, Pinkett-Smith offered more insight into her marriage. "I've always told Will, 'You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be OK,' because at the end of the day, Will is his own man," she said. "I'm here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that's not for me to do for him. Or vice versa."

In 2021, musician Willow Smith came out as polyamorous while speaking with her mother Jada Pinkett-Smith and grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Norrison on The Red Table Talk.

"With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you,” she explained.
