Old Baldy Lighthouse

Located in Southport, Brunswick County, and officially named "Bald Head Lighthouse," it sits across the Cape Fear River from the Oak Island. Due to it's isolated location and and size (110'), it hasn't been in service since the late 1930s. Originally stucco over brick, it's patchwork faรงade is due to decades of poor maintenance.

As little is known about the original lighthouse, this replica is located at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum in Manteo, Dare County.

Lighthouses have long been recognized by seafaring navigators as warning beacons against shoreline hazards, such as danger coastal waters, reefs and rocks, as well as markers for the entry into safe harbors. Usually painted to standout against the shoreline, these towers are often recognized by their black-and-white swirls and shapes. Some of the most beautiful, and well-visited, in the US are located along the Outer Banks shore communities of North Carolina.
