Ego Show
Cutthroat Island (1995)
Between this and Showgirls, Carolco Pictures sunk to the bottom of the ocean. Director Renny Harlin was keen to turn wife Geena Davis into an action star and had fun spending others' money to do so, $100 million budget Cutthroat Island however sailed bad seas and resulted in a catastrophic loss with just a gross of $10 million worldwide. An epic ego check.
ximvu's rating:
Paul Verhoeven and Joe Eszteras were paid handsomely for what is considered one of the worst atrocities ever conceived by Hollywood, a camp classic but a famous bomb, ruining careers and aspirations alike.
ximvu's rating:
Katherine Heigl gave several hilarious anecdotes about US2, one being that there were hundreds of women lined up to Steven Seagal's trailer to show their tits as they auditioned for the lucrative 5 second role of "nude sunbathing woman". This was to be his recovery after the disastrous On Deadly Ground but, without Busey and Jones, the reception was lukewarm and any threat to Seagal cracking the A-list was neutralised.
Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)
"I'm fucking untouchable" Eddie Murphy reportedly screamed to David Spade over the phone after the latter slagged him off on a Saturday Night Live sketch. It came after another megabomb, one that also involved Wes Craven as some A-list legends took a stake through the heart.
Waterworld (1995)
Known as 'Kevin's Gate' and 'Fishtar', Waterworld had epic disaster in the making after a troubled production drove its budget to $175 million. It was more expensive than most films in this section combined. It took many years, when the icecaps began to melt, for the film to finally break even.
