Linear
Following their 2D roots, these are linear platformers, sometimes they might have hubs or be mission-based, some are even sandbox (Sly) but they're not open-ended.

A list of 3D mascot platforming games.
What I personally look for in a 3D platformer:
* Challenging 3D platforming;
* Cool exploration;
* Cool art and sound;
* Amazing controls;
* Cool power ups (that don't water down the game and its challenges);
* Charm and charisma;
* Fun dialogue.
Of course, some are optional, like I wouldn't expect exploration of a linear plaftormer.
