Startopia - PC Games

The game is set in the aftermath of a devastating galaxy-wide war, leaving behind a barren network of space stations. You're charged with putting said space stations to good use, as you build communities, trade, attract visitors and hopefully turn them into station residents. Initially, this is easier than you think, as in true Theme Park style you build up your station (by adding new sectors) and try and pull people in. You can end up building the likes of a resort or an intergalactic trading post (depending on the objective in hand), with targets to hit before a mission is complete. Throw in some competition to crush and you've quite a challenge.

On the downside, the camera controls for navigating the exquisitely detailed levels (the graphics are superb throughout) do take some getting used to, and those missions aren't going to take you too long to complete (partly because Startopia is so addictive), but these are minor niggles. The key factor is that this is one of the funniest, most accessible and most downright playable strategy games in ages, and it really is worth having. --Simon Brew
