Polaris (Lorna Dane) is a fictional comic book character appearing primarily in the X-Men books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Arnold Drake, Don Heck, Werner Roth and Jim Steranko, Polaris first appeared in The X-Men # 49 (October, 1968). During most of its history of publication, she has been a superhero and a member of the X-Men or their sister groups, such as X-Factor, but from 1987 to 1989, was controlled by a telepathic villain and served as the supervillain Malice.
A mutant, Polaris can control magnetism like Magneto, who long suspected that he was her biological father, a fact confirmed in Uncanny X-Men # 431 (2003), making her the half-sister of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. She had a complicated long-term relationship with the X-Man Havok, to whom she was engaged.
Lorna Dane met the original team of X-Men while still a student. When the villain Mesmero used his "psyche-generator" to summon mutants in North America with latent powers, Lorna was forced to travel to San Francisco. There she met the X-Man Iceman, who broke her trance by causing her to slip on a patch of ice. Lorna met the rest of the X-Men, and learned she had latent mutant powers. Mesmero and the Demi-Men then captured and took her to their desert headquarters.
When the X-Men tried to rescue her, Magneto was revealed as the leader of the group behind the abduction and, more importantly, claimed to be the father of Lorna. Despite the X-Men's claims that Magneto was evil, Lorna dared not fight his own father. However, upon being told her biological parents had died in a plane crash years earlier, Lorna turned against Magneto. It was later revealed that she had caused the accident and Magneto had her memories of it erased with the help of Mastermind. For a time, Iceman was attracted to her, but she fell in love with his teammate Havok.
Lorna joined the X-Men and began living in Xavier's mansion.
Lorna's first codename was Magnetrix, but she quickly decided she did not like the name. That did not stop Havok to continue using the name as a way to tease and flirt with her. The two left the X-Men to pursue their mutual interest in geophysics. They moved to the Diablo mountain range in California. When the old and the new X-Men fought the mutant island Krakoa, Lorna shows the full potential of her powers for the first time by altering the Earth's magnetic field, sending Krakoa into deep space. She then joined Moira MacTaggert at the genetic research center on Muir Island.
Polaris' powers to allow her to sense and control magnetism, and manipulate metal. Polaris magnetic pulses can generate energy, create force fields, and allow her to fly. By concentrating, Polaris can perceive the world as patterns of magnetic and electrical energy, as well as the natural magnetic auras around living beings.
She has characteristic green hair, the first indication of her mutation, which she used to dye brown.
Polaris once lost her magnetic powers, but gained the ability to absorb the negative emotions of the environment and use it as strength, stamina, invulnerability, and the ability to temporarily increase her height and mass. Eventually she lost these additional powers and her original magnetic powers returned.
Polaris was among the mutants depowered by Scarlet Witch during the House of M story. However, due to the manipulations of Revelation, Celestial technology restored her natural magnetic abilities.
Lorna has experience in geophysics, and earned a master's degree in that field.
