Fred Cantrell was an anthropologist and a friend of Hawkman. Learning of the existence of a bird like race in the hidden city of Feithera, Cantrell expressed a wish to study them and with hawkman's help gained permission from the Feitherans to live with them for a time. He almost immediately fell in love with the Feitheran woman Osoro and, despite a certain amount of resentment from the Feitherans, married her. The couple had a son, Norda, who eventually became the superhero named Northwind.

Northwind was a founding member of Infinity Inc. He was also invested (before his egg ever hatched) with the Goodness of Thoth via a mystic incantation done by Worla, Northwind's grandfather and spiritual leader of the Feitherians. It was his destiny to combat Hector Hall (Silver Scarab) one day and save the world.
